Services & Activities

CCS provides a wide range of services and a number of activities aimed at improving the lives of those in our community who most need a caring hand up.

Our special camps offer memorable experiences to persons not otherwise able to fully enjoy the bounteous nature that surrounds us. Camp Kinkora, Camp Positive and Trail's End Camp have long provided and continue to provide unique opportunities to live unforgettable experiences and forge life-long friendships, while enjoying the lakes and forests most of us take for granted.

CCS's several senior community centres, meanwhile, ensure that seniors in the communities we serve benefit from meaningful support to help them live independent, active and more joyful lives. As part of this effort we also operate Satellite Centres, an outreach program instituted to provide support to seniors not able to attend activities at our centres.

Finally, Nazareth House is a residence for men offering shelter, meals and one-on-one support to those in need.

A number of programs also exist to help fulfill our mandate of enriching community life in the areas we serve. These include early-childhood learning programs to meet the needs of underprivileged youngsters and their parents, seniors' integration programs designed to reduce conditions of isolation, and a program to ensure access to health and social services for local English-speaking communities.

We invite you to see below for more detailed information, and to find out how to contact persons responsible for each individual program.

Spotlight on Some of our Programs

Assets based community development (ABCD)

ABCD provides opportunities for seniors to participate in and contribute to community life. We facilitate links between seniors and the "assets" that already exist in the community. These may include individuals as well as organizations. The benefit of this program is to help reduce the seniors' feelings of isolation.

Early Head Start / Little Learner's

Our Early Head Start and Little Learner's programs were created for children and their parents.

Early Head Start (located in LaSalle) supports children under 5 years of age and Little Learner's (located in Verdun) supports children 2-5 years old. Both programs offer age-appropriate activities, based on the developmental needs of each child, with the goal of preparing them for school. At the same time, meetings are organized for the parents to help reduce any feelings of isolation and to provide an opportunity to interact with other families facing similar challenges.

Drawing the Community Together!

"Drawing the Community Together!" program

Richard Dorais, a CCS resident artist, uses Academic Art to break isolation and raise self-esteem with seniors. Furthermore, research has shown that art helps sharpen motor skills and attention to detail. Richard's unique drawing and painting classes are held at low-cost housing Centres, as well as several Senior Centres and Elementary schools. His participants regularly comment on the benefits they reap from mutual encouragement and the creative synergy they experience by working together as a team.

  • It breaks seniors’ isolation and rebuilds self-esteem in each participant;
  • It improves participants’ social skills through developing group synergy and through collective encouragement;
  • Through drawing all participants develop their fine motor skills and mental capabilities;
  • Participants show increased attention and concentration levels;
  • It decreases stress levels;

Here is what a participant enthusiastically said:

"With this course, I'm at peace with myself. And I love the fraternal ambiance and community atmosphere."

Window to the World

"Window to the World" program

The aim of our Window to the World program is to reduce a sense of isolation among seniors by helping them become comfortable with new communication technologies. Through this program, seniors receive a laptop with an internet connection and can explore the online world by surfing the World Wide Web. And by using new technologies like Skype and web cams, seniors can communicate amongst themselves and with family and friends. We also offer computer classes in groups or privately at home - all of which are taught by bright students and dedicated volunteers. And each class is adapted to different levels of comprehension and learning speeds.

  • It breaks isolation for seniors, including those with impaired vision or hearing or with dyslexia;
  • This program provides them with a much-needed social network;
  • Since our courses are designed and adapted to the special needs of seniors, they succeed in our program with a sense of accomplishment and increased self-esteem;
  • It helps seniors spend some quality time with their children and grandchildren;
  • The seniors can participate in workshops of any kind including health conferences held by medical professionals.
